No place, publisher, or date. c. 1840. 8 hand-coloured illustrations with verse below. 8vo (7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches), original printed wrappers. Some soiling last plate dustmarked and creased. Re-spined with grained skiver in 1891 when this, together with 20 other children's books of ca. 1840's were bound together in one volume. Very rare - no copy cited by Copac.

The old woman is taking eggs to market but falls asleep by the wayside. A pedlar named Stout cuts her petticoats up to the knees. Upon awakening she exclaims "Sure this is not I!" But then she knows that her little dog at home will recognise her if she is she; reaching home the dog barks at her and she begins to cry but the dog soon wags his tail and all is well.

From the "prologue to UCL's Disrupters and Innovators exhibition in the Octagon Gallery [21 May - August 2018]. This installation focused on an illustrated book written in 1899 by Marion Wallace-Dunlop (1864-1942) who studied at UCL and whose story is featured in the Disrupters and Innovators exhibition that followed. Quotes featured in the exhibition are from Marion Wallace-Dunlop, The Magic Fruit Garden. About Marion Wallace-Dunlop and The Magic Fruit Garden. Wallace-Dunlop was an artist, writer and lifelong campaigner for women’s rights. In 1909, she became the first suffragette to go on hunger strike, having been imprisoned for stencilling political graffiti on a wall in the House of Commons .... earlier she created a fairy tale about a girl struggling to write an essay on ‘Perseverance’. In her quest for wisdom, Doc [Dorothy] finds a magic fruit garden where knowledge-fruit grows on bushes and trees. Here she picks ‘geography-plums and history-apples and grammar-pears and all the time her knowledge of everything kept growing bigger and bigger’. In a glass conservatory, Doc encounters piles of sweets ‘made from mixtures of the various fruits in the garden boiled in a syrup called Research. There was botany-sugar, zoology-candy, geology-toffee, and sugar-plums of every kind and colour’. When she gets home, her brother tells Doc it was only a dream and remarks that it’s ‘just like a girl to think that a dream is real.’ However, he then embarks on an adventure of his own which forces him to admit the magic garden is real".

Another leaf torn with some loss, some damp marking. Contemporary inscription on recto of frontispiece.

However extremely rare, only 2 copies cited by Copac. In the preface Mrs Mackie gives thanks to Messrs. Wilson and Buffon, of 391, Strand, to whom she is "indebted for the kindness with which they have placed the whole of their large and beautiful collection of stuffed birds at my command for selection of those specimens which have been figured".

However a child has scribbled in blue ink to the verso of half title (the dedication) and the facing recto of the frontispiece.

Some bumping to head and base of backstrip and a very small chip from the surface of the upper cover, lower cover marked, corners rubbed. The backstrip and upper cover are remarkably bright and fresh, also very good indeed internally.

London: Hildesheimer and Faulkner, n.d. [1884]. First [& only?] edition. Charming chromolithographic illustrations throughout. 4to, pp. 64, original cloth-backed glazed pictorial boards in dustwrapper. A remarkably good copy, the binding fresh and bright.

The dustwrapper browned and edge chipped on upper panel, chipped at backstrip and chipped and torn on lower panel. Printing of advertisements on endpapers faded. Some minor rubbing to the fore-corners of the boards but generally an excellent copy and very rare in dustwrapper.
